License Information

Call Sign
The combination of letters and numbers that identify an FCC license.

Radio Service
The name of the wireless service under which the Universal Licensing System (ULS) has issued the license. The name of the service is preceded by a unique, 2-letter code assigned to the service in ULS. Click here for a complete listing of Radio Services and their two letter codes.

Status
The current status of the license, designated by the following letter codes:

A—Active
C—Canceled
E—Expired
T—Terminated
X—Termination Pending

The following status messages may appear at the top of the License Search detail:

Pending Applications Icon This license has pending applications:

Click on the application file numbers included in the above message to access the pending applications in ULS Application Search.

Termination Pending Icon This call sign or a component(s) of this call sign is in termination pending status for failure to meet the buildout requirement.

If the license is in termination pending status for failure to meet the buildout requirement, the call sign status will display as “Term Pending.” If one or more components (location or frequency) of a license are in termination pending status, an icon will appear next to the affected component(s) on the Locations or Frequencies tab(s).

NOTE: When searching in ULS License Search, all statuses are selected by default. To narrow your search, deselect undesired status codes.

  • Auth (Authorization) Type
Developmental—Authorizations that the FCC granted for developmental authority to construct and operate transmitters for the purpose of developing a new radio service or a new technology not regularly authorized under specific FCC rules.
  • STA—Authorizations that the FCC granted for temporary use (i.e., circumstances requiring immediate or emergency use of facilities, temporary authority to install and/or operate new or modified equipment, etc.).
  • Demonstration—Licenses used by licensees involved in the sale and/or marketing of radio equipment. Demonstration licenses may be used for purposes of demonstrating equipment to potential customers at trade shows or at other exhibitions, performing on site coverage studies for potential customers, or other uses as provided for under specific FCC rules.
  • Regular—Regular authorizations, not applicable for Developmental, STA, or Demonstration.
Market

Market
The market code and the market description are displayed.

Channel Block and Associated Frequencies
The Channel Block letter/number and its associated frequencies will be displayed.

Submarket
If the market has been subdivided, the numerical code for the submarket will be displayed.

Dates

Grant Date
The date on which the license term (usually 10 years) begins. This date also sets the timetable for any applicable construction or coverage deadlines.

Effective Date
The date on which a license becomes effective. In most cases this is the same as the Grant Date. For modifications, the original Grant Date of the license will remain the same, but the Effective Date will be the day the Modification becomes effective.

Expiration Date
The date after which a license ceases to be valid. For example, a license with a 12/1/2004 expiration is no longer valid at 12:00am on 12/2/2004. In most cases wireless licenses have a 10-year license term, and the expiration date is the 10-year anniversary date of the original license grant date.

Cancellation Date
The date a call sign became inactive. The licensee may file an application to request cancellation. Licenses can become inactive when the license expires and is auto-deleted via ULS’s auto-expiration program. The FCC can also choose to terminate the license in the case where a licensee fails to meet its debt obligations to the U.S. government with respect to an auctioned license or for non-construction or discontinuance of operations.

Buildout Deadlines

Most licenses have either a 5-year/10-year Buildout deadline or a 3-year/5-year Buildout deadline.

Notification Dates

The dates on which the licensee notifies the FCC that the applicable Buildout deadlines have been met.

Licensee Information

FRN
The FCC Registration Number (FRN) is a unique 10-digit number that is assigned by the Commission Registration System (CORES) to an entity doing business with the FCC. The FCC will use the FRN to determine if all of an entity's fees have been paid for application filings requiring a fee.

To determine if an FRN is associated with an existing call sign, search by call sign in ULS License Search. The FRN will appear on the Search Results page. If there is no FRN associated with the call sign, select Register CORES/Call Sign on the ULS homepage. Search by FRN in ULS License Search to find all call signs registered to that FRN.

The entity type of the licensee is displayed. The entity types are listed below:

  • Corporation
  • Governmental Entity
  • Individual
  • Limited Liability Company

If the market has been subdivided, the code for the submarket will be displayed.

Auction ID and Auction Label
The number and title of the auction, which usually includes the Radio Service, are indicated (e.g., Auction 10 Broadband PCS). A link to the Auction's information page is provided.

Views
By default, the Market Summary page displays the Spectrum and Market Areas for the license. Click the links provided to view either Undefined Areas or Other Licenses in the Market Area.

The Undefined Areas view provides the number and spectrum associated with the undefined area. This information will be stated as either excluded or included data. Click on the name of the undefined area to view a complete list of the coordinates that delineate the area.

The Other Licenses link in Market view provides the Call Sign, Licensee Name, Grant Date, and Status for the licenses in the same radio service, market, and channel block. Click the Call Sign of the license to access all license detail information for that license.

Authorized Spectrum
The Market Summary page will display authorized spectrum and geographical areas for the current license if it has been subject to, or results from, a partition or disaggregation. (This information is not displayed for licenses that have not been partitioned or disaggregated.)

If a license has been disaggregated, the Authorized Spectrum of the license is displayed. Compare this spectrum with the Associated Frequencies at the top of the page to determine the difference between the amount of spectrum for the channel block and the amount of spectrum authorized for the individual license.

For licenses which have been partitioned or partitioned and disaggregated, Authorized Spectrum is displayed along with the geographic areas associated with the specific spectrum.

If a license is issued on an MTA basis, and one or more BTAs is partitioned, each remaining BTA is displayed with an indicator of “All Counties.”

If a license is issued on a BTA basis, and one or more counties is partitioned, each remaining county is displayed with an indication of the number of counties remaining versus the total number of counties in the market, e.g. “44 of 58 counties.”

Number of Counties/All Counties

Population
Note: The population figures displayed on a license are for reference only and are based on data provided by the Census Bureau for the 2000 Census. The licenses do not display population figures provided by licensees on FCC Form 603 for partitioned and disaggregated applications.

Auctions Cross References
