License Information

Call Sign
The combination of letters and numbers that identify an FCC license.

Radio Service
The name of the wireless service under which the Universal Licensing System (ULS) has issued the license. The name of the service is preceded by a unique, 2-letter code assigned to the service in ULS. Click here for a complete listing of Radio Services and their two letter codes.

Status
The current status of the license, designated by the following letter codes:

A—Active
C—Canceled
E—Expired
T—Terminated
X—Termination Pending

The following status messages may appear at the top of the License Search detail:

Pending Applications Icon This license has pending applications:

Click on the application file numbers included in the above message to access the pending applications in ULS Application Search.

Termination Pending Icon This call sign or a component(s) of this call sign is in termination pending status for failure to meet the buildout requirement.

If the license is in termination pending status for failure to meet the buildout requirement, the call sign status will display as “Term Pending.” If one or more components (location or frequency) of a license are in termination pending status, an icon will appear next to the affected component(s) on the Locations or Frequencies tab(s).

NOTE: When searching in ULS License Search, all statuses are selected by default. To narrow your search, deselect undesired status codes.

Dates

Grant Date
The date on which the license term (usually 10 years) begins. This date also sets the timetable for any applicable construction or coverage deadlines.

Effective Date
The date on which a license becomes effective. In most cases this is the same as the Grant Date. For modifications, the original Grant Date of the license will remain the same, but the Effective Date will be the day the Modification becomes effective.

Expiration Date
The date after which a license ceases to be valid. For example, a license with a 12/1/2004 expiration is no longer valid at 12:00am on 12/2/2004. In most cases wireless licenses have a 10-year license term, and the expiration date is the 10-year anniversary date of the original license grant date.

Cancellation Date
The date a call sign became inactive. The licensee may file an application to request cancellation. Licenses can become inactive when the license expires and is auto-deleted via ULS’s auto-expiration program. The FCC can also choose to terminate the license in the case where a licensee fails to meet its debt obligations to the U.S. government with respect to an auctioned license or for non-construction or discontinuance of operations.

Five Year-Buildout Date

The time period from the initial grant of a license for a particular cellular market until 5-years later, during which time the licensee has exclusive authority to build-out (i.e., expand the system).

Control Points

A location where the operation of a public mobile station is supervised and controlled by the licensee of that station. The Control point number, address, and contact information for up to three control points will be displayed in this section. If there are more than three, click the Display All Control Points link to view other control points.

To determine if an FRN is associated with an existing call sign, search by call sign in ULS License Search. The FRN will appear on the Search Results page. If there is no FRN associated with the call sign, select Register CORES/Call Sign on the ULS homepage. Search by FRN in ULS License Search to find all call signs registered to that FRN.
